People long ago told myths to explain why Earth has different seasons. A Native
American myth about Glooskap explains why Summer and Winter take turnsruling Glooskap’s country. Glooskap asks Summer to help him make Winter go away. Summer is stronger than Winter and makes Winter agree to only stay sixmonths a year. A Greek myth explains the change of seasons in a different way.
It tells of Persephone, the daughter of the goddess of growing things. It explainsthat Persephone must spend six months underground with Pluto. While she is
underground, it is winter. The six months she spends aboveground with her
mother is summer.
